Kingston’s mayor visits Miramar

first_imgBi-lateral relations, trade  and opportunities in culture between the city of Kingston, Jamaica and the City of Miramar  will be some of the topics up for discussion when the Mayor of Kingston, Delroy Williams and the Mayor of Miramar Wayne Messam will address residents in a Town Hall meeting scheduled to be held in South Florida next week. The meeting is also seen as an opportunity lay the foundation for the establishment of a sister cities agreement.A sister city, county, or state relationship is a broad-based, long-term partnership between two communities in two countries. The relationship is officially recognized after the highest elected or appointed official from both communities sign off on an agreement. The upcoming meeting is of particular significance as  Kingston celebrates a significant anniversary“It is fitting to have Mayor Williams visit Miramar as Jamaica and the Diaspora celebrate the 145th  year of Kingston as Jamaica’s capital,” said Messam.Kingston, Jamaica’s smallest parish, is located on  the southeastern end of the island.Founded in 1692, it sits on  the 7th largest natural harbor in the world that is protected by the Palisadoes, a sand spit that connects the city to the infamous town of Port Royal and the Norman Manley International Airport.Kingston is the heartbeat of Jamaica, rich in history and seeped in culture, the multicultural city came into existence as a refuse for survivors of the 1692 earthquake that destroyed two thirds of Port Royal.Spanish Town was then Jamaica’s capital and although the Governor of the island sought to have the capital moved to Kingston, a Bill to that effect was not approved by Britain. However years later, in 1865 Governor Sir John Peter Grant was assigned the task of re-organizing the island and this included relocating the capital to Kingston. The City of Miramar in Florida, came into being fairly recently. It was established in 1955 to serve as a “bedroom community”  for Miami and Fort Lauderdale .Based on the diversity of both cities, the Town Hall meeting is being touted as an opportunity for Williams and Messam to address residents of Miramar, members of the Diaspora and  the Caribbean Trade community. The event will be open to all residents.last_img read more

Dominicans told not to panic as island records volcanic eruptions

first_imgROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The Office of Disaster Management (ODM) says Dominicans should not be overly concerned at the “burst of volcanic eruptions” in the southern part of the island over the last 24 hours. In a statement, the ODM said that the earthquakes “were smaller than magnitude 3.8 which is below the threshold for posting to the Seismic Research Centre (SRC’s) social media platforms. It said that while some of these volcanic eruptions “have been reported as felt” the activity “is part of an ongoing series of earthquakes in that area which may be described as volcanic unrest.“The unrest does not necessarily mean that an eruption will occur but as seen in 1998, larger magnitude earthquakes can occur and so the public should remain vigilant.”The ODM said that from 2000-2004 there was similar volcanic unrest activity that did not culminate in an eruption. But it said that the Trinidad-based SRC “is continuing to monitor the activity and provide the authorities with regular updates”.last_img read more

So far, I am advised that 3091 cards have been processed and printed and the relevant applicants have been contacted to collect them.”Imbert also  revealed that over 100 of the Venezuelans were found to have  criminal records“I have been advised that out of the total number that was registered, so far, 112 have been found to have criminal records ranging from robbery, larceny, drug trafficking and homicides.”He could not say whether those individuals were in Trinidad and Tobago or repatriated to Venezuela. On May 31, the Government began a two-week registration process as they sought to provide refuge to Venezuelans.  The amnesty allows those without a criminal record to legally work in the country for one year.last_img read more

#DentalFeature: Gum Surgery – What Do I Need To Know?

first_imgPLANTATION, Florida – Your dentist has recommended that you see a periodontist, a dental specialist who treats periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that infects the gum tissue causing inflammation, redness, swelling and loss of bone around the teeth. It can affect one tooth or many. How did I get Periodontal Disease?Periodontal disease begins with bacteria present in the mouth attaching to the teeth. The bacteria collect and multiply, forming a biofilm called dental plaque. If this plaque is left on the teeth, the adjacent gingival tissues can become inflamed, resulting in the development of gingivitis, an early form of gum disease.  Daily flossing and twice-daily brushing with a toothpaste that fights bacteria can help prevent gingivitis. Plaque and food debris are removed by oral hygiene practices and thus clean the surface of the teeth and eliminate bacterial plaque at the gum line of the teeth. However, if plaque and food debris are not removed and oral hygiene practices are not maintained, then gingivitis will get worse and the gum tissue can become more inflamed, bleeding can occur, the area between the tooth and gum tissue can become deepened to form a periodontal pocket and periodontal disease can develop.A periodontal pocket develops as the plaque bacteria from the biofilm continues to accumulate and moves below the gum line. At this point, home care is not very effective in removing dental plaque. If it is left untreated by the dentist or dental hygienist, the biofilm will continue to spread below the gum line and infect the inside of the pocket. The bacteria in the plaque produce by-products that cause the adjacent soft and hard tissue to degrade, forming a deeper pocket in the process. This type of advanced periodontal disease can affect the roots of the teeth and they can become infected, too. The teeth may become loose or uncomfortable and the patient will require gum surgery. The patient would be required to have initial therapy to treat diseased periodontal pockets through scaling and root planning. The dental hygienist would utilize an ultrasonic scaling device to remove plaque, tartar and food debris below the gum line and would hand scale the tooth and root surface to make it smooth and disease-free. Scaling and root planning can be completed in two to four sessions depending on how much oral disease the patient may have.Types of Gum Surgery Gingival Flap Surgery – If pockets are greater than 5 millimeters in-depth, the periodontist would conduct this procedure to reduce the periodontal pockets. Most patients who have been diagnosed with moderate to severe periodontitis would go through this procedure. The periodontist would cut the gum tissue to separate the gum tissue from the teeth, conduct a thorough deep cleaning with an ultrasonic scaling device as well as hand instruments to remove tartar, plaque and biofilm below the pockets.Gingivectomy – This procedure is conducted to remove excess gum tissue that may be overgrown on the teeth to provide a better area to clean the teeth. The periodontist would numb the patients gum tissue and cut and eliminate the extra gum tissue in the mouth.Gingivoplasty – This type of gum surgery is used to reshape healthy gum tissue around the teeth to make them look better. If a person has tooth recession where the gum is pushed away from the tooth, a gingivoplasty can be done. A gum graft can be done where the tissue is taken from the roof of the mouth (this is called a graft) and then stitched into place on either side of the tooth that is recessed. After gum surgery, it is important that the periodontist or dental hygienist inform you how to clean the teeth and gum tissue with a toothbrush and an antimicrobial fluoride toothpaste, floss and antibacterial mouth rinse. Please consult your periodontal specialist or dentist for more information on how to care for your gum tissue and teeth after gum surgery.Dr Sharon Robinson, DDS, owns and operates the Dental Place in Plantation, Florida, with a second office – the Dental Place Cosmetix Spa in Kingston, Jamaica. AUDIO: Nigeria To Use WAFU Cup To Prepare for CHAN

first_imgHead coach of home-based Super Eagles, Salisu Yusuf, says he intends to use the West African Football Union (WAFU) Cup as a platform to prepare for the 2019 Championship for African Nations (CHAN).On Wednesday, Yusuf named an 18-man squad to represent Nigeria at the regional football tournament which kicks off in Ghana this weekend. The core of the team is made up of players who represented the country in last month’s CHAN qualifiers against Benin Republic – with Nigeria winning 2-1 on aggregate over two legs to qualify for the biennial championship.“The WAFU would help us perfect our team for CHAN,” Yusuf told busybuddiesng.com.Nigeria’s record in CHAN is one that needs much improvement as the West African nation failed to qualify for the first two editions of the competition, before finishing third in 2014 and getting eliminated at the group stage in 2016.With the next edition billed for January 2018, The WAFU Cup comes at, perhaps, the best time for the most populous black nation on earth, and Yusuf has a chance to take a close look at players he could take to CHAN. “I still believe that one or two players would still come after the WAFU [cup] for that team,” Yusuf said. “My believe is the people we called now would give the team more strength in attack because we called players that have been doing very well in their teams.“We changed some players because they couldn’t perform what we expected them to perform, so we had to give other players an opportunity to play,” the coach said. Nigeria will playoff against Sierra Leone in the first round of the tournament, afterwhich eight teams will emerge for a group phase competition. The tournament takes place from the 9th – 24th of September.Audio Playerhttps://www.busybuddiesng.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/salisu-wafu-06sep17.mp300:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.RelatedNigeria To Host 2021 WAFU Cup TournamentJuly 18, 2018In “Africa”CHAN 2020: Home-Based Eagles Ready To ‘Make Nigeria Proud’ Against Togo – Anaemena (AUDIO)October 18, 2019In “CHAN”CHAN 2020: Eagles B Intensify Preparations For TogoOctober 16, 2019In “National Team”last_img read more

Madrid, Barça Host Easy Games as Valencia Aim To Continue Good Run In La…

first_imgIt’s another La Liga weekend and judging from the amount of goals scored last week, lots of excitement is expected in the Spanish top flight this weekend.Levante host Getafe in the first game of matchweek 9 at the Estadio Cuidad de Valencia in a midtable clash while high-scoring Real Betis host struggling Alaves whose only points this season were earned away from home, at Levante. In what should be the most exciting match-up on Saturday, 2nd-placed Valencia host Sevilla at the Mestalla. Valencia remain unbeaten in the Liga and have September player of the month Simone Zaza and Rodrigo firing in goals for them while Sevilla have neither won nor scored on their last two trips away from the Ramon Sanchez Pijquan after losses to Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao.Bottom placed Malaga travel to the Camp Nou to play unbeaten Barcelona in the last action of Saturday night. Malaga are winless in the Liga this season but would have some iota of belief after being the only team to not concede a goal to Barcelona in the league last season. Lionel Messi is fit as is Luis Suarez although it is unclear if Gérard Deulofeu would be handed another starting berth.Villarreal and Las Palmas kick off Sunday’s action at the Estadio la Ceramica. Villarreal are one of five unbeaten teams at home in the league with Las Palmas having only one win in their last five.Celta Vigo could go just two points off Atletico Madrid if they get a win at home to Los Rojiblancos at the Balaidos on Sunday afternoon. Atletico though have won on the last four occasions these two teams met and would hope to get back on track after a dismal performance in the Champions League away in Azerbaijan.High-flying Leganes host Athletic Bilbao. Leganes have only lost once in their last five while Athletic Bilbao have won just once in the last five.Real Madrid round off Sunday’s action when they host Eibar at the Santiago Bernabéu. Ronaldo and Benzema both got their first league goals last week away to Getafe and with Gareth Bale still doubtful, goalscoring responsibilities still lies majorly on both of them against an Eibar side who have conceded 17 goals already this term.On Monday Real Sociedad host Espanyol at the Anoeta on the back of a resounding away victory on Europe in midweek while struggling sides Deportivo la Coruna and Girona square up at the Riazor later on Monday Night Football.RelatedValencia On The Brink Of History As Barça And Madrid Travel In Search Of Points.October 27, 2017In “Europe”Easy Wins Expected for Top Sides as La Liga Returns After Tough European MatchesSeptember 29, 2017In “Europe”Difficult Trips For Top Clubs As Barça Seek To Maintain 100% RecordOctober 14, 2017In “Europe”last_img read more
