Vancouver Symphony gets outreach grant

first_imgThe Firstenburg Foundation has granted the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra $20,200 to further its educational outreach program, focused specifically on reaching low-income children and disadvantaged communities.The VSO’s Education Initiative includes many school-oriented activities, including: high school and college-student classical music ambassadors on local campuses; symphony and small-group concerts at schools and other facilities such as senior citizen and assisted living centers; free concert tickets and special invitations to pre-concert discussions; school visits from VSO conductors Salvador Brotons to work with student musicians — and even an annual instrument “petting zoo,” so kids can touch and try out instruments, during the orchestra’s free summer concert in Esther Short Park.Board chairman David Smith said that VSO sees its role as providing not just music but education, leadership development and an improved quality of life in Clark County.Learn more at vancouversymphony.org.last_img
